Somehow Hopeful: The Story of a Woodsman

A Feature Length Documentary

The award-winning documentary is now available! Through an enchanting twist of fate, the introduction of a rare horse breed into Jason's life sparks a profound understanding of the natural world and reveals a sustainable approach to meeting human needs while safeguarding our most precious environmental assets.

Jason Rutledge has been logging with horses for over 40 years. He goes into a forest, identifies the trees that are beginning to decline using a “worst first” selection method based on multiple indicators of decline. Then, he harvests those trees employing animal power for extraction. By using horses and a sophisticated method for identifying which trees should be harvested, Jason keeps a forest healthy for the benefit of, not only the landowner, but for the entire region as well. Through decades of observation, Jason knows that we must commit to restorative forestry in order to have a healthy environment. Sustainability isn’t enough, we must be restorative. But will those in power listen to his words of wisdom?

The Culture

The strength of American culture was built upon farmers and those living a similar life - a life built upon working, understanding and nurturing the land. American author Wendell Berry warned us decades ago that we were turning our backs on this important way of life and that the consequences would be severe. He was right. However, there are those fighting back and leading a revolution.

Our Greatest Ally

Dogs may be man’s best friend but mankind has had no greater animal partner than the horse. For Jason Rutledge, the Suffolk Punch, an endangered breed, is the perfect workmate. Even today, these horses have many advantages over their heavy, expensive, mechanized counterparts.

The Future

The future of sustainable cultures seems to always be under attack. However, you will meet a determined, intelligent group of young people that will leave you hopeful.
